It's amazing, I think of myself as fairly technologically savvy. What I mean by fairly is, I know a lot about web development then a lot of people and there are a lot of people that know a hell of a lot more then me.
Take this web site as an example. Sure, I used a CMS to build my site and yes the CMS makes it fairly easy for anyone to start-up a web site. Yes, my site isn't coded by me in it's entirety (not even 3% coded by myself). However what the CMS allows is; 1. me not having to reinvent the wheel. 2. allows me to concentrate on adding content to my site. 3. Have fun developing artwork. and 4. learning a little about the code that drives the site by making modifications to the code to suit my needs.
With my recent expedition into Facebook, I wanted to merge the two sites the best I can. The first thing I did with Facebook was to link my RSS Feed to my Facebook profile. I also created a link in Facebook that goes to this homepage. These are pretty basic functons, but really I want to integrate this site with my Facebook page. I felt the next step was to have the ability to link any piece of content into Facebook.
After a quick search, this appeared as if it would be an easy integration. Downloaded a plugin and installed, nope it didn't work. Downloaded/Installed a couple more plugins with the same results.I found a plugin that actually installed and worked, but it didn't have a Facebook bookmark, making it useless for my needs. I continued searching, and I found a program that installed, had a Facebook function, and worked...kind of. The bookmark would post in my Facebook profile, but when you clicked the link, the link would take you to this site but would say "you don't have the proper permissions to view this page". I was quickly able to identify why this happened. I went to work trying to locate a plugin that would work around this problem and tried to modify the code to fix the program.
I finally gave-up looking for a plugin, module, or component that worked and focused-in on a modification of someone else's code. I tried some 20 different pieces of .php code to try and call the correct page, but nothing I did would work.
To fix my problem, I had to make my URL's Search Engine Friendly (SEF). Now, I tried this a couple years ago and about blew-up my website. I took another stab at making my URL's friendly and somehow I did it without any problems. Once, this site became SEF one of the 15 Facebook Bookmark plugins worked. So I modified the .php to meet my wants and now this will be the first blog of mine that will get posted in Facebook
BTW...Facebook has this little "Share on Facebook" function. Basically, you drag this icon to your web browsers bookmark tab. As you surf the internet and come across a page you want to share, while on the site open your bookmarks and click "Share on Facebook". This will automatically post that website on your Facebook profile.
Yeah...my work = waste of time...pwnt by technology again!
